Serious illness? The money goes straight to you
Critical illness insurance pays a one-time lump sum of cash when you are diagnosed with a covered serious illness – for example a heart attack, cancer or stroke. The money is paid directly to you, not to the hospital or doctor.

How it works – 3 steps
Choose your coverage
Together we pick a plan and benefit level that fits your budget.
Diagnosis
If you are diagnosed with a covered illness – such as a heart attack, cancer or stroke…
Cash paid to you
…you receive a lump-sum cash payment, according to the plan’s terms.
How can you use the money?
However you need – it’s your decision. For example:
- Bills and everyday expenses
- Mortgage or rent
- Travel for treatment
- Lost income while you can’t work
- Deductibles and other out-of-pocket costs
- Caring for your family
Works alongside your health insurance
Your health plan (e.g. from HealthCare.gov or Get Covered Illinois) pays doctors and hospitals – but there is usually a deductible, coinsurance and expenses no medical policy covers. Critical illness coverage pays you, so you can cover those costs and focus on recovery.
A real-life example
Mark (52) from Des Plaines has an ACA health plan plus critical illness coverage. One day he is hospitalized with a heart attack. His health plan covers much of the treatment, but Mark can’t work for several weeks. After the diagnosis he receives a lump-sum payment from his policy. He uses it to pay his deductible, his mortgage and household bills – so his family doesn’t have to worry about money while he recovers.
Illustrative example. Benefit amounts and covered conditions depend on the plan and state.
Questions & answers
Does this replace health insurance?
No. It is extra protection that works best together with a health plan, helping cover the costs it leaves behind.
Which illnesses are covered?
It depends on the plan. Typically serious events such as heart attack, cancer or stroke, plus others listed in the policy. We’ll go over the exact list together.
Does the payment depend on my hospital bills?
No. It is a set lump sum defined in your plan, paid to you after diagnosis of a covered illness – regardless of what treatment cost.
What can I spend it on?
Anything: bills, mortgage, travel for treatment, lost income or your deductible. It’s up to you.
